This report is an evaluation of a demonstration site coordinated by Health Workforce New Zealand, in response to a GP shortage in the MidCentral region. Nurse practitioners work with aged care facilities to assess and manage residents' health.
This final evaluation finds that a nurse practitioner in aged care can:
- improve timely access to health care services
- provide seamless care for older people across primary and secondary services
- reduce emergency department visits and hospital admissions
- help the recruitment and retention of GPs, who appreciate the clinical support.
