The first book on the subject of Māori and alcohol. It covers pre- and early contact with Pakeha, charting the introduction of alcohol into Maori society during the nineteenth century, the impacts of the New Zealand Wars, increased trade and colonisation and the role of alcohol surrounding the Māori prophets Te Kooti, Te Whiti and Rua Kenana. The conclusion summarises the historical narrative and considers the policy implications of the role of history in Māori alcohol policy formulation.
