The report Child and Youth Offending Statistics in New Zealand: 1992 to 2008 is the third in an annual series. It presents statistics on children (aged 10 to 13) and youth (aged 14 to 16) involved in child offending and youth justice processes.
The report examines trends in Police apprehensions of children and youth over the 1995 to 2008 period, and in prosecutions and sentencing of 14 to 16 year olds over the 1992 to 2008 period. Prior to 2006, youth justice statistics were presented alongside those of adults in the Ministry of Justice's annual report series titled 'Conviction and Sentencing of Offenders in New Zealand'.
The child and youth offending statistics report has become an established source of information on trends in child and youth offending. This year, for the first time, the report presents people-based Courts statistics, which enable a count of the actual number of individuals going through the courts.
