This article presents the results of a survey of private sector employees in the Auckland area. It was conducted as a large-scale pilot study in order to test questionnaire and survey methods. It was the intention that the pilot survey would provide a platform for further surveys and establish guidelines for other
research projects based on industry and organisational case studies.
The main purposes of the survey were to identify recent employment relations changes (in particular as part of workplace organisational changes) and to map employee attitudes to these changes. This article concentrates on the key findings in the areas of employment contract arrangements and negotiations,
remuneration, other terms and conditions of employment, and training. Specific emphasis is given to the way in which the surveyed employees evaluated recent changes in employment relations.
