This summary is specific to good practice findings in the Gateway programme, which was one of the three programmes or services evaluated.
Gateway supports secondary students in Years 11 to 13 to undertake structured workplace learning in a range of industries to achieve National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) credits. The Gateway programme is administered by the Tertiary Education Commission, with strategic policy oversight provided by the Ministry of Education. This summary should be of interest to schools running the Gateway programme as it highlights examples of different schools’ approaches to delivering the Gateway programme effectively for Māori.
Methodology
A review of literature focusing on good practice for Māori in transitions from secondary to tertiary education was undertaken. The information produced was then used to ascertain what agencies and providers could be doing to enhance their youth transitions programmes and services for Māori. Te Puni Kōkiri also interviewed 34 people across four Gateway sites. Interviews took place with a range of stakeholders at each site including coordinators, staff, employers, Māori youth and whānau.
