Research has a critical role to play across the full spectrum of cancer control - from primary prevention through to palliative care. Recognising and promoting relevant research is crucial to the success of the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy.

This is a report from the Cancer Control Council documenting the first important steps in developing a strategic approach to cancer control research in New Zealand.

Purpose

During the development of the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan, a preliminary survey suggested cancer research was unevenly distributed across the continuum of cancer control. However, this impression was based on incomplete data, and there was clearly a need for a more thorough survey of research relating to cancer control in New Zealand.

This report describes a stocktake of research relating to cancer control for which funding was allocated in calendar years 2003, 2004 and 2005. It was carried out by Dr Douglas Ormrod on behalf of the Council, with the advice of the Council’s research working group – Professor John Gavin (Chair), Associate Professor Chris Atkinson, Associate Professor Tony Blakely, Dr John Childs and Dr Beverley Lawton.
