Improving oral health is one of the 13 priority areas of the New Zealand Health Strategy. ‘Re-establishing a nationwide dental health system for children and adolescents’ has been one of government’s key strategies in achieving this.

In 2004, the Ministry of Health commissioned District Health Boards, through DHBNZ, to undertake a review of school dental services in their regions. DHBNZ provided project management for the review and summarised the reports into one document. The final report summarises the initial DHB findings relating to the review, and outlines the possible service configuration models commonly reflected in individual reports.

The results of the review have helped inform the new vision for child and adolescent oral health services.
