This benchmark survey was undertaken to inform the scoping of a Public Health Depression Initiative.

• Interviews were completed with 1301 persons aged 16 years and over, randomly selected from throughout New Zealand.

• Maori and Pacific peoples were over-sampled, resulting in 324 of the interviews being with Maori and 300 with Pacific peoples.

• Within each of the samples (General, Maori and Pacific), there were quotas to ensure the correct gender mix and regional distribution, plus quotas for some age groups, mainly 16 to 24 year olds.

• The CATI (computer-assisted telephone interviewing) interviews lasted an average of twenty minutes.

• More than one response was recorded for most questions; therefore not all percentages reported add to 100%, as responses are not mutually exclusive.

• Interviewing took place between 11 May and 17 July 2005.

• There was a high 79 percent response rate.
